The idea behind this new feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.
Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of BioPics…
“I’m free! I’m Winston Bloody Churchill, and I’m free! ” – Winston Churchill
Number of Times Seen – 1 (27 Oct 2014)
Brief Synopsis – The early years of perhaps England’s best Prime Minister from his days as a child through his commission in the army to his early beginnings in Parliament.
My Take on it – I had hoped that this movie would be more interesting but it was done in such a boring fashion that I cant really say I found it so enjoyable.
With a cast featuring a younger Anthony Hopkins, Robert Shaw and Anne Bancroft and directed by Richard Attenborough, I expected a more entertaining biopic.
Perhaps the problem here is that this movie tries too hard to show Churchill as a Lawrence of Arabia type character when in fact his better and more interesting days were when he was a grand statesman which wouldn’t happen for a few more years.
Thst being said, it was interesting to learn about his early life and there are a few great scenes.
Bottom Line – Pretty bland movie that I think could have been made more interesting. Some good scenes, but they only sparsely appear over the 140 minutes of this movie.
Genre Grandeur Worthy? Once again, I can’t say that this one will be added to my favorites list of biopics. Too drawn out a somewhat boring at points.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
