Genre Guesstimation – First Blood (1982)

The idea behind this new feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of 80’s action movies…

First-Blood-Posters“[noting dirty American flag patch on Rambo’s ragged military jacket] You know, wearing that flag on that jacket, looking the way you do, you’re asking for trouble around here, friend. ” – Teasle

Number of Times Seen – probably 3 (twice on cable in the 80’s and 3 Nov 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A wandering Vietnam veteran accidently gets in trouble while visiting a small town in Washington while looking for an old army comrade.

My Take on it – This was Stallone’s very first (of many) successful action movies.

I actually only recall seeing this probably twice on cable but couldn’t remember much about it.

The idea of veterans having trouble reentering society after experiencing the traumas of war isn’t a new idea, but it is presented here in a very interesting way that makes us feel that he should be treated with more respect.

The majority of this movie isn’t even told from Rambo’s perspective, but rather from everyone else’s which shows us how they perceive him giving him a much greater aura of mystery and fear at the same time.

I’m not the biggest fan of Sylvester Stallone, but like the character of Rocky, he is perfectly cast here.

Bottom Line – Stallone’s first action hit that helped propel him to action hero status. Great social message about the effects of war on soldiers that they carry with them for years. Showing things mostly from everyone else’s perspective works to add more fear and tension to the plot. Recommended!

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Nope, this movie is suspenceful, but it still is missing some element that would have made it great.

Rating – Globe Worthy

  1. “God didn’t make Rambo. I did.” That’s the only line I can remember from the film. That, and Stallone’s crying and mumbling at the end. If I recall, Brian Dennehy was really quite good (as he always is) as the baddie
