“We’re not bad people. We just come from a bad place. ” – Sissy Sullivan
Number of Times Seen – 1 (3 Nov 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A successful businessman with a severe sex addition tries to find meaning in his personal relationships.
My Take on it – When one thinks of addition, sex isn’t usually the first to come to mind.
This movie takes the idea of someone with a severe addiction that (obviously) involves interpersonal relationships and tries to show how empty one can feel when trapped in an addition, no matter the “drug”.
The characters in this movie are both complex but also act very superficially and that’s what draws the viewer in.
We want to see how he is affected by his addition and just because one has an addiction doesn’t mean that they don’t want to try and overcome it.
The choice of using sex as the addition is actually a novel one because every type of physical contact should have a similar effect, but here it all depends on whether his mind is there or not will either bring him closer or further away.
Both lead actors in this movie, Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan are quite bold in the way they allow their characters to be exposed (yes, that pun was on purpose). The truth tho is that we are shown how they are both exposed both physically and emotionally .
This wasn’t the easiest kind of movie to watch and eventhough I enjoyed it, I think it belongs in the list of movies that are very well made, but can’t be watched over and over.
Bottom Line – Very interesting study on the effects of addiction (any kind actually) on a person’s relationships. Fassbender and Mulligan are both very bold here. Not a movie that I’d feel like rewatching so soon tho. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy

Fassbender was incredible here and totally deserved an Oscar nomination. But of course, the Academy’s a bunch of prudes and not ready for rewarding a movie like this. Good review.

Agree – not a movie I’d ever watch again. Fassbender was great, though. (And he’s hot)
