Super 8 (2011)

Super_8-421797032-large“I know bad things happen. Bad things happen. But you can still live. You can still live. ” – Joe Lamb

Number of Times Seen – 2 (16 Aug 2011 and 6 Nov 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A group of kids making a homemade zombie film accidently discover a military secret.

My Take on it – JJ Abrams is a great director and writer, but he should stick to his own ideas to entertain us instead of trying to emulate his moviemaking heroes.

Abrams had hoped that this movie would be to kids of today as ET (1982) was for all of us kids who grew up in the 80’s.

Unfortunately, this movie spends too much time trying to match Spielberg that the plot gets lost in the shuffle. This movie forgets a few times along the way that it’s should be a message movie instead of a monster movie.

The special effects are amazing and that’s one of the main reasons that this movie usually works for the audience.

Most if the actors chosen are unknowns, but most of those kids still have very bright futures ahead of them if their performances here mean anything.

Bottom Line – Despite Abrams’ attempt to make a’new’ ET, this movie isn’t as memorable. Great special effects help raise the entertainment factor here, but instead of being a message movie like ET it too often ventures into monster movie territory which undermines the importance of the story. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy
