Genre Guesstimation – Escape From New York (1981)

The idea behind this new feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of 80’s action movies…

escape_from_new_york___revamped_by_nicolehayley-d4xp1pa“God save me, and watch over you all. ” – The President

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Nov 2014)

Brief Synopsis – An ex-soldier who is now a criminal is sent to rescue the President who has been kidnapped when his plane gets shot down over New York City which is now a penitentiary.

My Take on it – Some movies are hyped so much that when you finally get around to seeing them, all you can feel is disappointment that it doesn’t meet the expectations you had for it.

This happened to me with this movie. I have heard how amazing it was over the last thirty plus years and I just didn’t like it as much as I thought I would have.

That being said, I loved the premise but not the execution.

It’s very easy to see Director John Carpenter’s fingerprints on the look and feel of the movie.

Kurt Russell proved that he can be a great badass action hero with this film and still claims that this is his favorite role.

Bottom Line – Cult classic that has an interesting premise but just doesn’t live up to the hype. Recommended!

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not in my book, great premise but not executed well enough to be among my favorites.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
