“Sanity’s not a choice, Marshall. You can’t just choose to get over it. ” – Dr. John Cawley
Number of Times Seen – 2 (26 Mar 2010 and 20 Nov 2014)
Brief Synopsis – in 1954, A US Marshall travels to an island where the mentally insane are kept in order to investigate the disappearance of one of their patients.
My Take on it – I actually wasnt the biggest fan of this the first time I saw it, but watching it again has given me a better appreciation of it.
I have heard that the book is much better than the movie due to the nature of being able to explain more of the history and mysteries on the page than show them visually on the screen.
The plot twists definitely require more than one viewing to fully grasp and appreciate the storyline and plot. Certain scene made me think I was watching a Christopher Nolan film.
Bottom Line – Very interesting murder/mystery caper that is adapted very well from the source novel. Must be seen more than once to appreciate it properly. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy

Hi Rob! 🙂
Snap. I’ve only watched this once and I didn’t love it but I’ve actually been thinking for ages I must watch it again as first time watches can often miss the point somewhat and the Scorsese / DiCaprio duo is usually so reliable!
I remember just finding it a bit silly really (all that fuss for one patient?) and quite long if I recall correctly. Great cast though and very atmospheric – spookier than I expected. Very Un-Scorsese in many ways.
Great review as ever! 🙂 🙂

I wasn’t the biggest fan of this the first time I saw it either, and I’ve only seen it in bits and pieces since then. I know I need to give it another whirl, yet still I hesitate…maybe one day. Although I will say Scorsese doesn’t always do it for me.
Good review, Rob!
