The Package (1989)

package“I lost my package, a prisoner I was bringing back from Germany.” – Sgt. Johnny Gallagher

Number of Times Seen – at least 10 times  (Theater in ’89, cable, video, DVD, 24 Aug 2000 and 20 Nov 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A career soldier is assigned to deliver a prisoner to Washington DC from his post in Germany. Problems arise when the ‘package’ disappears en route.

My Take on it – I’m a huge conspiracy theory movie fan and I think this one ranks up there with the best of them like Seven Days in May (1964) and Arlington Road (1999).

The storyline was very fitting for the end of the Cold War Era.

Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones are both excellent here in their respective roles.

I think that I enjoy this movie so much because it skillfully uses elements from so many other conspiracy theory stories fact and fiction alike that it feels like it could really have happened.

Bottom Line – Excellent conspiracy theory premise that rivals Seven Days in May (1964) as one of the best. Hackman and Jones are both perfectly cast. Highly recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy
