Genre Guesstimation – Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983)

The idea behind this new feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of holiday themed movies…

mickeys christmas carolMy partner, Jacob Marley, dead seven years today. Oh, he was a good’n. He robbed from the widows and swindled the poor. In his will, he left me enough money to pay for his tombstone, and I have him buried at sea!” – Scrooge McDuck

Number of Times Seen – at least 5 times (cable in the 80’s and 3 Dec 2014)

Brief Synopsis – The story of A Christmas Carol told with the use of Disney characters with Scrooge McDuck playing his namesake..

My Take on it – I remember seeing this version of A Christmas Carol as a kid and loving it.

The use of Scrooge, Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie, Daisy, Jiminy Cricket, Willie the Giant and Pete really makes this film so much better than many of the other adaptations that I’ve seen over the years.

The one fault that I have with this movie is it’s length; a very slim 26 minutes just isn’t enough to fully grasp the whole story.

I guess I need to keep in mind that essentially this was made for kids to better appreciate the classic tale and it’s widely known that shorter is better for them due to short attention spans 🙂

If you’re looking for a way for your kids (or even yourselves) to start getting into the holiday season spirit, I don’t think you can go wrong with this version of the tale.

Bottom Line -Great adaptation of the Scrooge story that takes a somewhat sad and dark story and makes it very kid friendly and a great tool to exposed your kids to this kind of cautionary tale. Highly recommended!

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Most definitely, who coulda asked for a better version of the story of A Christmas Carol than with Disney characters.  It is once again a favorite of mine in this genre.

Rating – Oscar Worthy
