For today’s final review, here’s my viewpoint of today’s Bond movie, Thunderball (1965).
Number of Times Seen – 2 or 3 times (cable in the 80’s and 90’s and 2 Dec 2014)
Brief Synopsis – While on vacation, Bond must stop a top SPECTRE operative when he steals two nuclear missiles and threatens the world that he will use them unless he is paid 100 Pounds.
My Take on it – Connery continued his success as Bond in his fourth movie with this installment.
The villain Largo, his henchmen and the numerous women Bond bed here are all cookie-cutter quality characters. On the one hand, they fit in well with the series and with the way their characters should be seen, but on the other hand, none of them are memorable enough to be standouts.
The locales and the action (even underwater) sequences are pretty enjoyable to watch.
This is the first (of numerous) Bond movies to predominantly feature sharks as “pets” of the villains and they are presented well here.
Once again Bond has an arsenal of gizmos and gadgets and we even get to see him use a flying jetpack.
Fits perfectly in with the Bond series and is a thrilling addition.
Bottom Line – Another score for Connery as Bond. Great thrilling action and some very cool gadgets including a flying jetpack. The villain and the Bond girls are perfect templates for the series which unfortunately doesn’t make them too memorable. Still a fun Bond movie. Recommended!
Rating – Globe Worthy
