“So, people hire you to break into their places… to make sure no one can break into their places? ” – Bank Secretary
Number of Times Seen – At least 10 times (Twice in theater in ’92, Video, DVD and 6 Dec 2014)
Brief Synopsis – A security company gets into trouble with the government when they are hired to obtain a secret code breaker from a mathematician
My Take on it – I remember seeing the trailer for this movie mid 1992 and was very excited to see it when it came out.
I was actually so excited that I promised two different friends that I would see it with them and since they both couldn’t see it at the same time, I ended up going to see this twice in the same week in the theater with both friends separately making each of them think that I was only seeing it with each of them.
What’s not to love about this movie?
First of all, this movie has an amazing cast; Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd, River Pheonix, David Strathairn, Mary McDonnell and Ben Kingsley.
The premise is a great conspiracy theory one which is always entertaining. They even manage to pepper in humor in the perfect places to make us laugh out loud quite often.
The characters themselves are have their quirky characteristics and despite only being together with these characters for only two hours, we get to know them quite well.
I love the way that words in the titles are anagrams and that there is even a scene with characters playing scrabble to continue with the anagram theme.
I love the fact that 22 years after this movie was made, we can better appreciate parts of the plot that deal with information technology of the web and internet security. The public was only barely aware of these fields in ’92, but today most of the population are familiar with it.
Bottom Line – Amazing cast. Great conspiracy theory premise. Very memorable characters. Ideas well ahead of their time that are even more poignant today. Highly recommended!
Rating – Oscar Worthy
