The Dam Busters (1955)

Brief Synopsis – When the British decide on a daring plan to destroy 3 German controlled dams during WWII, they have to find a way to train the pilots and engineer the right kind of new bomb in a very short time frame.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I’d actually heard of years ago but totally forgot about and never ended up seeing it.

It was famously used by George Lucas as the basis for his attack on the Death Star and there are even sites on the Internet that can show you how similar the two “attacks” really are. Even some of the dialogue and intonations of the pilots are eerily similar. 😉

I read how strong of a plan this was for the allies and how important this was on its way to winning the war.

It’s interesting how such an important blow to the Germans remains very unfamiliar and I think this story needs to get more ‘press’.

My one complaint is the fact that the pilots all seem like stock characters and we dont get to know them very well which takes away from the suspence during the mission because we care less who makes it and who doesn’t.

Bottom Line – Very interesting premise of a story that apparently isn’t as well known as it should be. Famously used by George Lucas as the basis for parts of the attack on the Death Star. Too bad the characters aren’t developed a bit more to make us care. Recommended!
