Goodnight Mister Tom (1998)

goodnight mister tomMum said war was a punishment from God for people’s sins” – William

Number of Times Seen – 1 (22 Dec 2014)

Brief Synopsis – During the early days of WWII, a young English boy from London is sent to safety in a small village and befriends the eldrly widower who becomes his ward.

My Take on it – Thanks to my good friend Emma for recommending this movie to me.

I had never heard of it beforehand and was pleasantly surprised at the way it was made.

I’m actually shocked to hear that this was a children’s book because some of the subject matter is very disturbing and doesn’t quite seem appropriate for younger kids, but they still found a way despite that to convey it in a great and moving way.

The story itself is very moving and I liked how they built up the friendship between Tom and William despite their many differences.

This movie has a great message that works on multiple levels.

My one criticism of this movie is that parts seemed to be rushed and had they been developed better (as I assume and hope was done in the book) it would have flowed better.

Bottom Line – A very ‘safe’ movie which despite some heavy subject matter finds a way to convey a thoughtful and touching wartime story with a lot to teach us all about life. Recommended!

Rating – Globe Worthy
