Cinema Paradiso (1988)

cinema paradiso“Living here day by day, you think it’s the center of the world. You believe nothing will ever change. Then you leave: a year, two years. When you come back, everything’s changed. The thread’s broken. What you came to find isn’t there. What was yours is gone. You have to go away for a long time… many years… before you can come back and find your people. The land where you were born. But now, no. It’s not possible. Right now you’re blinder than I am.” – Alfredo

Number of Times Seen – 2 (25 May 2009 and 24 Dec 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A film maker reminisces about his youth in Sicily and how he fell in love with the movies.

My Take on it – my good friend Table9Mutant from Cinema Parrot Disco recently got me reminiscing about this movie and so I decided to watch it again after not having seen or thought about it in 5 years.

I’m not a big fan of non-English language films, but I decided to give this one a go again when my interest was once again piqued about it.

This movie is one that anyone who loves movies should try to see despite it’s length and the fact that it’s in Italian.

If you do choose to see it, I urge you to seek out the version of it since without the DC, lots of scenes are cut and choppy leaving more questions than answers.

I really enjoyed the messages of this movie about following your dreams and trying to see that whatever we do now will effect our entire lives so try to always make it count.

This movie makes me a big nostalgic for times when it was much more difficult to own your own TV or the way people see movies.

Very well deserving of the Best Foreign Film Oscar that year amongst other prestigious awards that this film was able to acquire.

Bottom Line – Great story about loving things in life and following your dreams with no regrets. A MUST SEE for all movie lovers.  If you’re gonna see it, see the 3 hr directors cut otherwise lots of scenes don’t make sense.  Highly recommended!

Rating – Oscar Worthy
