Genre Guesstimation – Home For the Holidays (1995)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of holiday themed movies…

hfth“Nobody means what they say on Thanksgiving, Mom. You know that. That’s what the day’s supposed to be all about, right? Torture.” – Claudia

Number of Times Seen – 2 (27 Nov 2001 and 26 Dec 2014)

Brief Synopsis – A woman travels to visit her very eccentric family for Thanksgiving which brings up lots of memories both good and bad.

My Take on it – The main strength of this movie is its cast. It isn’t too often that you can get so many talented actors together for a family movie that doesn’t have the best of stories.

Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr. , Dylan McDermott, Charles Durning, Anne Bancroft, Steve Guttenberg, Claire Danes and Cynthia Stephens are all great with the material they are given, but with a crazy script depicting a crazy family there isn’t much they can do.

I can’t say that this was such an enjoyable film to watch despite the cast and few humorous scenes

Bottom Line – Crazy story about a crazy family that is only interesting to watch due to its stellar cast. Has a few funny scenes too.

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not by a longshot!

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
