Genre Grandeur – Groundhog Day (1993) – MovieRob (Encore Review)

For the next entry in this month’s Genre Grandeur – Holiday movies, here’s a review by me of my favorite movie centered around Groundhog Day.

Next month’s genre has been chosen by my good friend Emma of emmakwall (explains it all) and she has chosen the genre of British Thrillers, so send me your reviews of your favorite British Thriller(s) by Jan 25th and I’ll post it. It’s real simple, just send me an email to britthrills@movierob.net and I’ll post it.

Let’s see what I thought of Bill Murray’s day stuck in Punxsutawney, PA.

groundhog day“Come on, *all* the long distance lines are down? What about the satellite? Is it snowing in space? Don’t you have some kind of a line that you keep open for emergencies or for celebrities? I’m both. I’m a celebrity in an emergency.” – Phil

Brief Synopsis – A very cynical weatherman gets trapped living the same day over and over with no end in sight.

My Take on it – I truly love this movie and can watch it over and over and over again and again.

I love what Bill Murray did with the role of Phil Connors and I doubt any other actor would have been able to match his intensity while embodying the role.

The idea of filming the same day so many times repeatedly sounds boring, but the late great Harold Ramis was able to inject enough humor and freshness into each new ‘day’ that we constantly look forward to seeing what will happen after the clock strikes 6:00 and are treated once again to the song ‘I got you babe’ by Sonny and Cher.

Bottom Line – One of Murray’s absolute best roles. Not sure anyone else would have been able to embody Phil Connors as well. The repetitive nature of the movie never gets boring. Highly recommended!

Rating –Oscar Worthy (no change from original review)
