“Flattery don’t charge these batteries, civilian. ” – Sergeant Calhoun
Number of Times Seen – 2 (3 Feb 2013 and 4 Jan 2015)
Brief Synopsis – An arcade game villain decides that he has had enough of being a bad guy and goes on a quest to become a hero.
My Take on it – I must start this review by stating that this is one of my favorite Disney animated movies.
They basically get just about everything right about how to make an enjoyable animated movie.
Like PIXAR’s Toy Story (1995), this movie takes the viewers back to their childhood by focusing on a pastime enjoyed primarily by kids.
The way that the animators were successful in merging so many different Arcade worlds and make them “fit” is unbelievable.
As a kid, I loved arcade games and Donkey Kong, Qbert, Pac-Man and Space Invaders were among my favorites. This movie brought back nostalgic feelings from when I use to play those games.
This movie takes the nostalgic feeling of those 8-bit games and merges them with modern first-person games and sprinkling in a bit of everything that has come in-between the two kinds of arcade games.
I loved how the King Candy character was based on the look and sound of Ed Wynn who we all recognize as either The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland (1951), Mr. Dussell in Diary of Anne Frank (1959) or Uncle Albert from Mary Poppins (1964).
The rest of the characters are so well created it truly is a joy to try and guess what kind of candy each it or from what arcade game they have come from.
The animated visuals are wondrous and Disney proved here that they could return to form and compete against some of the other animation firms.
The message of this movie is perfectly done and once again this is a Disney movie that kids and adults can enjoy togetehr each on their own level.
The best part here tho is the way they created the character’s looks and movements based on the voice actors; John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch are all perfect choices for their characters.
I was quite disappointed that this lost to Brave (2012) for the Oscar for Best animated feature because this movie is clearly superior in every way.
Bottom Line – One of Disney’s best animated movies. Nostalgic arcade game look and a great message make this such a great film to watch. The visuals and characters are superb and the voice talent are spot on. Highly Recommended!
Rating – Oscar Worthy

Although I did like Brave, I will agree that Wreck-It Ralph is easily the better of the two. This is just overall a great movie. Hence why my gravatar is what it is. 😀 Great review, Rob!

I did really look forward to watching this and I did enjoy it but I do remember being slightly more underwhelmed than I expected. FAR BETTER than Brave though!! But then again, I thought Despicable Me was better than them both 🙂 review that next Rob!!! (your kids will love it!)

Great review. I’ve been meaning to re-watch this one for a while.
I was relatively disappointed by it in theatres. It came out of the gate swinging. I loved the first 20 minutes or more of the movie. However, I hated the Vanillope character, and felt they spent too much time in the Sugar Rush game. It became more about building that particular world, than that of the video game characters in general. Half the movie’s sight gags were candy puns personified. It worked well, it’s just not what I wanted going into it.
I feel that on the re-watch–knowing that going in–I’d enjoy it more. Well, everything but Vanillope, anyway.

Tnx for stopping by and commenting. I agree that it could have been even better had it not focused solely on one ‘world’, but that was also a lot of its charm.
Would love to hear if ur opinion is swayed upon rewatch as you suspect it might be.

Hey, Rob! I’m back! 🙂 Great review of a great film! I agree–this one totally should’ve beaten Brave, which didn’t impress me nearly as much as I’d hoped. Still good and visually gorgeous, but Wreck-It-Ralph was so much more fun. If only the Academy let us vote…

I’m in the minority on this one. I don’t hate but I don’t love it. I explain it in my review but I feel like they spend too much time in Sugar Rush and Vanellope really gets on my nerves. I wish they had been more like the Lego Movie zipping around different worlds in the arcade. Sugar Crush looks a lot like other worlds in other movies I’ve seen before. I do like Ralph as a character and I’m sure if I played video games I’d give it a higher rank. Just not my fav

That year I would have given the Oscar too Paranorman as I think it is much better than Brave or Wreck it Ralph

I just feel Ralph would have been so much better if it zipped through lots of worlds and not just the army game and Sugar Rush. But I gave it a C so not like I hate it but I just more cold than most

I think it didn’t need to zip thru things. It was great as is. Just my opinion
