Wreck-It Ralph (2012)

Brief Synopsis – An arcade game villain decides that he has had enough of being a bad guy and goes on a quest to become a hero.

My Take on it – I must start this review by stating that this is one of my favorite Disney animated movies.

They basically get just about everything right about how to make an enjoyable animated movie.

Like PIXAR’s Toy Story (1995), this movie takes the viewers back to their childhood by focusing on a pastime enjoyed primarily by kids.

The way that the animators were successful in merging so many different Arcade worlds and make them “fit” is unbelievable.

As a kid, I loved arcade games and Donkey Kong, Qbert, Pac-Man and Space Invaders were among my favorites. This movie brought back nostalgic feelings from when I use to play those games.

This movie takes the nostalgic feeling of those 8-bit games and merges them with modern first-person games and sprinkling in a bit of everything that has come in-between the two kinds of arcade games.

I loved how the King Candy character was based on the look and sound of Ed Wynn who we all recognize as either The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland (1951), Mr. Dussell in Diary of Anne Frank (1959) or Uncle Albert from Mary Poppins (1964).

The rest of the characters are so well created it truly is a joy to try and guess what kind of candy each it or from what arcade game they have come from.

The animated visuals are wondrous and Disney proved here that they could return to form and compete against some of the other animation firms.

The message of this movie is perfectly done and once again this is a Disney movie that kids and adults can enjoy togetehr each on their own level.

The best part here tho is the way they created the character’s looks and movements based on the voice actors; John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer and Jane Lynch are all perfect choices for their characters.

I was quite disappointed that this lost to Brave (2012) for the Oscar for Best animated feature because this movie is clearly superior in every way.

Bottom Line – One of Disney’s best animated movies. Nostalgic arcade game look and a great message make this such a great film to watch.  The visuals and characters are superb and the voice talent are spot on. Highly Recommended!
