“I’ve always been someone’s daughter or mother or wife. I never got to be in the driver’s seat of my own life. ” – Bobbi
Number of Times Seen – 1 (15 Jan 2015)
Brief Synopsis – After facing many personal hardships in her life, a woman decides to strengthen herself by hiking 1000 miles through the Pacific-Northwest. Based on a true story
My Take on it – This isn’t the first time the main theme of a movie is centrally about a person with a troubled past seeking redemption by going on a journey.
As a matter of fact, it’s a pretty common theme and the film makers here didn’t add much to make this feel in any way, shape or form unique, so we are left with another average movie.
The thing though that elevates this movie a bit is the great performance by Reese Witherspoon. She gives off the perfect mix of a woman on a quest to find and reinvent herself and at the same time an extremely vulnerable and somewhat clueless woman wandering through the Pacific Northwest where danger could happen any second from man or beast yet she still carried on.
Bottom Line – Often used plot line for movies about people seeking redemption. Adequately done here with a great performance by Witherspoon. Unfortunately, everything else seems too recycled to feel unique.
Rating – BAFTA Worthy

Yeah, I felt the scenery was really wasted, “the great outdoors” should have felt like a secondary character but was really reductive. She did great – saved it for me, because I didn’t really care for the woman who wrote the book.

I liked it even with its flaws–flashbacks were iffy, in particular–and I really liked the performances by Witherspoon and Dern.

A different way of expressing the same thoughts I had on this film.

Not one that grabbed me enough to go and see, but sounds like some people could well be inspired by it.
