Cocoon: The Return (1988)

cocoon the return“You’re my favorite Martian. ” – Jack

Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (Theater in ’88, cable, video and 29 Jan 2015)

Brief Synopsis – The aliens and retirees from the previous movie return to Earth in order to finish their original mission and visit those they left behind.

My Take on it – I’ve never understood from an entertainment perspective why Hollywood loves to make sequels that aren’t as good as their predecessors. (I realize that it’s usually only for financial reasons).

The previous movie ended things in a great way and here this movie comes and tries to continue or even change that wonderful ending.

Yes, it was a lot of fun seeing the “old gang” all back together on Earth and interacting with each other, but I think that watching this actually lessens the impact and implications of the first movie.

In the end, this is another mediocre Hollywood sequle that could have been better if it has been given more thought or if they had chosen to keep the integrity of the original intact and not have made this.

Bottom Line -Not as good as the original and it tries too hard to tie up story lines from the original that should have been left alone.  Nice to see the entire cast return, but solely for nostalgic purposes.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
