Genre Guesstimation – Tex (1982)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre was chosen by Justine of Justine’s Movie Blog and she chose Coming of Age Films as the Genre for February.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Coming of Age movies…

tex“Some people go, some people stay. I’m staying” – Tex

Number of Times Seen –  Between 5-10 times (cable in the 80’s and 3 Feb 2015)

Brief Synopsis – Two brothers, abandoned by their father after their mother dies, try to deal with life and high school the best they can on their own.

My Take on it – As a kid, I loved all 4 of S.E. Hinton’s novels about growing up in a small town in the Midwest.

I recall reading each of the books numerous times and also seeing the movies often.  The Outsiders (1983) was always my favorite, but I still recalled this one also being great to watch.

Because it’s been so long since I saw or read this story, I couldn’t recall anything about it besides the fact that Matt Dillon played the lead role here (as he also did in Rumble Fish (1983) the following year).

Watching this with a totally fresh perspective was interesting for me, because I kept trying to find the parts that resonated so much for me 30+ years ago and I had trouble finding them.

I found the story, characters and acting OK, but I can’t say that I could find the reason behind my memories being so enamored with this story.

Ultimately, this movie feels like a generic movie of the genre and although it isn’t a bad movie and is interesting to watch, I can’t claim that it’s a great one either.

Bottom Line – Recalled this being much better than it is. Was a big fan of Hinton as a kid, but something is definitely lacking here despite interesting themes.

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Not at all. I recall the book being much better but was pretty disappointed how mediocre this was.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
