“But Christine – fear can turn to love. You’ll learn to see, to find the man behind the monster, this… repulsive carcass who seems a beast but secretly dreams of beauty secretly… secretly. Oh, Christine. ” – The Phantom
Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Feb 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A French opera House is ‘haunted’ by a mysterious figure in this classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical brought to the screen for the first time.
My Take on it – I have been s fan of ALW’s music for over twenty years snd have heard some of the songs from this musical numerous times in that time frame and have always loved them.
That being said, I never had the opportunity to see this on the stage, so I was always very unfamiliar with the storyline itself.
Joel Schumacher knows how to make a grand and flashy production and this movie is no exception.
The sets, the atmosphere, the music and the shooting style are amazingly done, but the thing this movie is lacking is in its storyline.
I didn’t find the story very believable especially the love story aspects of it.
Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson all doing a fine job with their singing
Bottom Line – Excellent music and production, but the story is slightly lacking and I had trouble believing the love story aspects. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The lit candelabras that rise from the water were not done with special effects or CGI lights: the special wicks ignited when they reached the air. This effect was done in one take and didn’t work again after that. (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy

I have a serious soft spot for this musical. The movie is great, but I saw a live performance in NYC and it was incredible. 🙂 Nice review, Rob!

Great review Rob. This is probably one of my favorite movies. I’ve seen it on stage and the movie does pale in comparison, but it is a beautiful adaption nonetheless.
