“If a man counts his chickens before they hatch, he gets a scrambled egg.” – Punjab
Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (cable in the 80’s and 1 Mar 2015)
Brief Synopsis – An orphan girl and her dog get taken in by a millionaire during the 1930’s
My Take on it – This is another movie that I enjoyed much more as a kid than I did now probably because of the somewhat extreme plot.
If you discount why millionaire would want to raise a ten year old girl the story is interesting enough to watch.
The thing that obviously make this movie memorable is its songs. Who can forget classics like Tomorrow, Hard Knock Life and my favorite Let’s Go To The Movies. 😉
A few months ago, a remake was attempted, but IMHO didn’t come anywhere close to being as enjoyable as this one because they tried too hard to make it very PC and to modernize the songs.
Bottom Line – Much more enjoyable when watched as a kid, but still has an interesting story and some great memorable songs. Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Producer Ray Stark said of the film, “This is the film I want on my tombstone.” In his negative review of the film, Time Magazine’s Richard Corliss wrote “Funeral services are being held at a theater near you.” (From IMDB)
Rating – Globe Worthy
