Number of Times Seen – 2 (7 Jul 2001 in Theater and 3 Mar 2015)
Brief Synopsis – An aspiring scientist who is an expert on the long lost city of Atlantis gets a nessage from his explorer grandfather that sends him on the expedition of a lifetime.
My Take on it – I was excited to rewatch this after only having seen it once before when it came out in 2001.
Unfortunately, I didnt find it to be as exciting and interesting as my memory led me to believe.
The plot too closely followed the typical Hollywood formula of movies in a similar genre.
Man discovers new race, studies them, likes them better than his own race , joins them in their fight against his own race leading to disastrous circumstances for everyone.
Dances with Wolves (1990) is a perfect example of this genre and there are so many more to choose from that do it vetter thsn they were able to achieve here.
As always, Disney was able to get an amazing voice cast. Michael J. Fox and the recently passed James Garner and Leonard Nimoy lead a great voice cast.
This isn’t Disney’s best, but it is also far from its worst.
Bottom Line – Not as good or as entertaining as I had recalled. Great voice actors as always with Michael J. Fox and the recently passed James Garner and Leonard Nimoy leading an all star cast. The plot resembles numerous other movies about an outsider who studies a foreign race and befriends them leading to disastrous results for all involved. Not Disney’s finest hour, but also not its worst.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Because the movie was planned out as an action/adventure, the production crew wore T-shirts to work that read “ATLANTIS – Fewer songs, more explosions”. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
