Meathead March – The Sure Thing (1985) – MovieRob

meathead march blogathonFor today’s final review of The Sure Thing (1985), here are my thoughts on it.

sure thing1

“I was in Paris once with my wife… boy am I glad she’s dead.” – Cowboy

Number of Times Seen – At least 5-10 times (cable in the 80’s and 2 Mar 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A college freshman makes a cross-country trek from Boston to California in order to meet up with a “sure thing”; along the way, whatever can go wrong, does.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I saw numerous times as a kid in the 80’s and always thought it was a fun movie.

Watching it now 30 years later, I understand the story and characters must better and still had lots of fun with it.

One of my favorite teen comedies is Better off Dead (1985) and I have always liked John Cusack and his movies. He is great in this movie and once again showed that even at a young age, he was a very competent actor.

He is able to portray the nice boy next door extremely well and his characters are always the kind of underdog that we all love to root for the whole way through.

Daphne Zuniga, who is mostly remembered by us movie fans as Princess Vespa from Spaceballs (1987) is great as the nerdy studious college girl who Cusack’s character likes and with whom he unexpectedly shares his cross country trip with in order to meet his ‘sure thing’ in LA.

The chemistry of their love/hate trans-American relationship is perfect and no matter the situation, the give and take between them is so equal that you know that they are meant to make the journey together.

Bottom Line – Very fun 80’s college type romp that also gives us an interesting story.  Cusack and Zuniga are great in the two main roles and both are believable snd have excellent chemistry together. Recommended.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – When Gib (John Cusack) and Alison (Daphne Zuniga) are on the library rooftop, Gib points out the constellation Cassiopeia to Alison. In the movie Serendipity (2001), John Cusack’s character also mentions Cassiopeia. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
