Number of Times Seen – 2 (25 Feb 2003 and 10 Mar 2015)
Brief Synopsis – The story of Iris Murdoch and here husband John Bayley whose love endured so much during their long marriage.
My Take on it – I have always enjoyed these kind of movies.
It’s a biopic that shows how ordinary people react in extraordinary ways when faced with dilemmas in life. We also get to see them in all their vulnerability in order to see who they really are.
This movie has four great actors playing the couple as both young and old and the movie moves back and forth between the two time periods.
Kate Winslet and Judi Dench play the younger and older versions of Iris while Hugh Bonneville and Jim Broadbent play the versions of her husband John.
All but Bonneville garnered Oscar nominations with Broadbent deservingly taking home Gold as Best Supporting actor.
My only complaint about this movie was that it’s too short. I think we all would have benefited from a bit more time with these wonderful characters.
Bottom Line – Great biopic that shows us who these people really were warts and all. All 4 lead actors are great. It’s the kind of movie that makes you wish it were longer because the characters (young and old) are all so good. Broadbent truly deserved his Oscar for this role. Highly recommended
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Only the second film (after Titanic (1997)) to have two actors nominated for an Academy Award for playing the same role in the same movie. In both films Kate Winslet played the younger version in the dual-nominee role. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy
