The Rose (1979)

Number of Times Seen – 1 (9 Mar 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A popular singer leads a very destructive life due to the pressure of her work.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I had never seen and I watched it when it was chosen for Kieron’s Film Club this month.

Unfortunately, I had a lot of trouble sitting through this because I just had no sympathy whatsoever for the characters.

The idea of a rock star having to deal with their own personal dilemmas dealing with fame and how one is perceived by close friends and family before they reached that fame is a very interesting theme to explore, but this movie just did a poor job of doing that IMHO.

Bette Midler was shocking here because of the way she looked (young and thin) and by her hugely talented vocal work.

The concert scenes were done extremely well but I felt that the scenes in between were very repetitive and boring to watch.

The theme song of this movie (The Rose) is definitely the high point and I felt it was so poignant for it to be as the credits role…nothing like ending things with the best you got.

Bottom Line -Good music, but the storyline itself feels lost and without direction.  Midler is a really good singer, but not necessarily an amazing actress.  The concert scenes were enjoyable to watch, but everything in between just rambled on and on.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin. (From IMDB)

Rating – Razzie Worthy
