Meathead March – The Magic of Belle Island (2012) – MovieRob

For today’s final review of The Magic of Belle Isle (2012), here are my thoughts on it

“I always felt like a book is a friend that does what no friend can do; stay quiet when you wanna think. ” – Charlotte O’Neil

Number of Times Seen – 1 (23 Mar 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A grumpy retired writer moves to a small community in order to have a quiet life away from the hustle and bustle and finds himself slowly being drawn into the arms and hearts of the townspeople

My Take on it – Not only is this movie one of the few Rob Reiner movies that I had never seen before this blogathon, but it is the only one I had never even heard of beforehand.

This movie isn’t perfect, but I liked the way that it slowly introduced us to the townspeople and then we got to know the main character Monte, also in a slow and informative way because we were only privileged to know about his life little by little, ultimately giving us full understanding.

My one qualm about this movie is that despite Virginia Madsen being a beautiful woman, the potential romantic connection between her and Morgan Freeman feels a bit stretched due to the age difference between them.

The themes explored about loss, love and connecting with others are well done and it was nice being in their world for nearly two hours.

Bottom Line – Enjoyable film about loss, love and connecting with others. The potential romance between Madsen and Freeman seems a bit stretched but is still heartwarming. I liked the pace and explanations of the character transformations. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In a 2012 Huffington Post interview with Virginia Madsen, Madsen pointed out that despite ‘Morgan Freeman”s nearly half-century-long career in movies, she is the first actress ever to have an onscreen romantic love story with any character he has played.  (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  2. Again — another fascinating bit of trivia man! I’ve never stopped to think about that; out of all the characters Freeman has taken on he really hasn’t really gotten romantically involved with any of his co-stars’ characters. That’s crazy.

I might have to check this out. A) I’m too inexperienced with Reiner’s work and B ) I like the sound of this.
