The Power of One (1992)

PowerOfOne(1).jpg“Any ideology that needs to attack the thing that least threatens it is an ideology that will not outlive its own generation. ” – St. John

Number of Times Seen – between 3-5 times (cable in the 90’s and 23 Mar 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A young boy growing up in South Africa in the 1940’s is believed to be the one person who can unite everyone in South Africa.

My Take on it – I recall seeing this movie back in high school for the first time and immediately falling in love with the characters and the story.

The story is so powerful that I’m actually surprised that it isnt more well known.

I seem to recall also reading the book and being captivated by it even more than the movie. I guess I might try to seek it out when I’m novel-free 😉

I really enjoyed how they try to explain the historical problems in SA and how they even attempt to hypothesis a solution (at least according to standards of the 1940’s).

For a pretty unknown film, the cast of famous actors (even with small parts) is pretty impressive; Morgan Freeman, Armin Mueller-Stahl, John Gielgud, a very young Daniel Craig and Stephen Dorff top the cast list.

Their presence even gives the story a more epic feel to it.

Suffuce it to say, this movie made me yearn to learn more about the history and situation in post war South Africa.

Bottom Line – Powerful movie based on an amazing novel about an attempt to explain why South Africa is the way it is and how it could be changed. Long list of great actors with small parts that give the story even more presence. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – This is Daniel Craig’s theatrical film debut. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  1. I thought this book was truly awesome, and I saw the movie many years ago but I haven’t since. Goodness, you want to learn more? The biggest thing is that the country is falling apart, really.
