The Golden Compass (2007)

golden compass“Are you familiar with the Prophecy of the Witches? ” – Fra Paval

Number of Times Seen – 2 (4 Feb 2009 and 23 Mar 2015)

Brief Synopsis – In a world similar to ours but where people’s souls are external to their bodies and take the form of an animal companion, a young girl goes to the North to try and save her friend and other kids who have mysteriously disappeared.

My Take on it – I have always been a fan of franchise movies because they are able to ring us into a world for more than just just two hours.   In the first movie, we get to know they characters and the general storyline and in subsequent movies, we get to watch their future adventures when there is no need to spend time introducing the characters and we can get right into the meaty parts of the story.

This movie is based on a 3 book series and the first part spends most of its time introducing us to the characters and the parallel world they inhabit.

Unfortunately, this is a franchise that was discontinued after the first movie and we are left feeling that there is no closure at the end because the decision was made after the movie was completed.

I really enjoyed meeting the characters and finding out about their world and the whole daemon issue was fascinating.

The fact that animals are integral to the movie and that they talk means that a movie like this must rely heavily on special effects and I must say that the effects are nearly impeccable.  This movie won the Oscar for Special Effects and beat out both Transformers (2007) and Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End (2007) for that honor.

I’m really sorry that the rest of the story will not be able to be told on the screen and I hope to one day get a chance to read the books in order to understand and experience the complete story.

Bottom Line – Very thrilling beginning of a story that unfortunately has been cut short by the fact that the other books won’t be made into movies. Love the daemon concept and the characters. Great storyline. Amazing special effects that deservingly won an Oscar.  Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Sam Elliott proclaimed that this was by far the most exciting CGI film he has been involved in. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
