Number of movies seen from this year – 157
Number of movies reviewed – 144 (including 20 Encore Reviews)
1988 was a pivotal year for me as a moviewatcher. I was 14 and would spend every Sunday in the theater when possible.
Having seen all 5 Oscar BP nominees, I can’t say they were the most entertaining and enjoyable movies for me at the time (or even now for that matter.)
As you will see, only 2 made my top ten. Of the other three, even as a hormonal 14 year old, I have never been a fan of Dangerous Liaisons and I found The Accidental Tourist to just drag on. Mississippi Burning was very good, but there were many more movies that were just better that year.
It would take me another year to see my #1 and that was on video and then cable so many times over and over. Nothin’ like creating a genre with such a great film.
My #2 is a relatively recent entry into my repertoire and I have loved it both times I’ve seen it because it is the perfect kind of movie for a cinephile like me. 🙂
8. The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!

What’s ‘The Adventures of Baron Munchausen’ like? Always intrigued by Gilliam’s work but never got round to watching it

Haven’t actually seen it in more than 30 years, so I can’t say that I recall it so well. Hope to rewatch it again one of these days. Sorry. Truthvis, this project has reminded me of Soooooo many movies I need to rewatch 😉

I’ve never seen 2 and 5, and I’d have to put Grave of the Fireflies pretty high, but this is almost identical to what my top ten would be. Great choices and a great year for movies!

Not a fan of giblhi. Have never seen grave. CP is a great movielovers movie. CTA is probably one of Murphy’s best besides the original BHC and Trading Places. Wss truly a great year in film. Tnx SG
