Number of movies seen from this year – 146
Number of movies reviewed – 131 (Including 17 Encore Reviews)
As you’ll see and be reminded of shortly, 1995 was a great year in cinema because it gave us so many wonderful and memorable movies that touch a wide variety of genres.
It was the year where Mel Gibson came out of nowhere to win Best Director and Picture at the Oscars for his epic Braveheart and remains one of the biggest Oscar blindsides in history. (Yes, the surprise two years later was a much bigger snub).
Everyone thought that Ron Howard’s Patriotic Apollo 13 would win Best Picture, but the fact that Howard himself was snubbed for a Best Director nomination despite winning at both the Globes and DGA made it easier for Gibson and Braveheart to prevail.
Only 3 of the 5 BP nominees made my list and you might be slightly surprised where each of them fit in and how I rank them.
My list this year features, action movies, historical dramas, a courtroom drama, an animated movie that opened the floodgates, a crime thriller that remains to this day as a masterfully woven tale of suspense and a fictional account of how a teacher can affect one’s life.
8. Indictment: The McMartin Trial
1. Mr. Holland’s Opus

Haven’t seen the latter five, but you know I love #1! This was the year of my other favorite Ghibli film Whisper of the Heart too. This feature sure is showing me just how many movies I’ve yet to see.

I used to own Truman, never in 10 million years would I have expected you to rank it in your top movies! ha ha Not many people would even know Gary Sinese starred it in.

Me too! I’m a presidential history buff and this one was great. Sinese was great here. Gotta rewatch it. When I bought the dvd, friends thought I was nuts!

Hey Rob,
While I agree that the first Die Hard was sheer brilliance, I was never a big fan of any of the sequels, including With a Vengeance. That’s probably the only one here that I’d definitely have excluded. (Haven’t seen Truman or McMartin.)
The rest of them … All very good. I suspect I’d have Toy Story, Crimson Tide and Usual Suspects a little higher on my list.

Yea. I loved Crimson Tide and debated putting it higher. As for DH. I thiught tge first two were amazing and 3 was very clever which is why it only barely made the list. Both Truman and indictment are movues that the history buff in me just love to watch.
