Finding Neverland (2004)

finding neverland“You find a glimmer of happiness in this world, there’s always someone who wants to destroy it. ” – J.M. Barrie

Number of Times Seen – 2 (17 Jan 2005 and 16 Apr 2015)

Brief Synopsis – The biographical account of how struggling playwrite J.M. Barrie conceived of the idea of Peter Pan with the help of a family that he meets in the park one day

My Take on it – We have all heard of and are familiar with the story of peter Pan and this movie gives us the opportunity to get a better understanding of how its playwriter JM Barrie thought of the idea and brought it to fruition.

Obviously, as with any other biographical movie, not everything really happened as it’s presented, but they do a great job giving us an idea of how it possibly happened that a struggling playwrite came up with the story of a boy who never wanted to grow up.

I am not the biggest fan of Johnny Depp in general, but in this movie, he was able to give off the feeling that he truly was able to embody a character that even as an adult clings freely to his youth and spreads that feeling towards others.  His chemistry with the child actors is wondrous and we don’t ever doubt that he is having as much fun using his imagination as the kids themselves are.

The script is done well and along with the music, we are perfectly transported to another time and place.

This is definitely one of my favorite movies of that year!

Bottom Line – This is such a great and inspirational movie that presents us with the basis for one of the greatest children’s stories about trying to keep the spark of childhood wonderment in all of us no matter our age.  Depp is excellent here and has great chemistry with the child actors. The script and music help transport us to another time and place. IMHO, one of the best movies of the year. Highly Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – During the formal dinner scene, Johnny Depp placed a “fart machine” under Julie Christie’s chair. He had a remote control that he used to trigger a fart sound from the device. The children are laughing more at that than from playing with the spoons. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy
