Number of movies seen from this year – 133
Number of movies reviewed – 104 (including 6 Encore Reviews)
2003 was a year which all the awards ceremonies were dominated by one film, which was the culmination of a 3 movie, 10+ hour adventure series that was even able to break the Oscar “unofficial shunning” of Science Fiction/Fantasy being considered part of the mainstream awards ceremonies.
In any other year, my #3 movie would have had much more of a chance to win awards because it’s a very engaging thriller that took home two acting Oscars.
To round out the Best Picture nominees that made my top ten, you will find #2, which is a heart warming movie that I fell in love with the first time I saw it and have enjoyed it immensely every time since because it is a movie about falling down and then having the ability and courage to stand up and try again over and over.
The other two nominees that year – Master and Commander and Lost in Translation are two movies that I just couldn’t get in to while watching them and personally don’t feel that they were movies that can be considered among the best of the year.

I love that #1! Though I haven’t seen many of these, I’m surprised that Pirates and X2 didn’t make the cut. I also really love Holes and Secondhand Lions.

Wasnt a fan of pirates the one time I saw it and x2 just missed the cut. Never saw holes or shl, will correct that soon 😉

I just couldn’t figure out Lost in Translation? Felt like I was missing the point, truthfully…but I’m not very intellectual when it comes to movies.

Good to see you like Shattered Glass as much as I did. I haven’t met many people who’ve seen it – and, most of the time, when I tell people that it proves Anikin can act, that the Star Wars’ writer/director is more to blame for Christensen’s poor performance in those flicks, folks disbelieve me.
And number 1 is the obvious choice here – especially given that is the best in that very good franchise. Never did see #3. And while I appreciate #2, I don’t love it quite as much as you seem to.

yea, I’m a big fan of Shattered Glass and of HC’s work in it. He was also great in Life as a House.
You should see #3 when you get a chance. I was very moved by it
I understand what you mean by #2. I find it very powerful, but I tried reading the book and got annoyed with the writing style really quickly
No one can argue about #1 being the best movie of the year (even those cranky old academy voters) 🙂

Good choice. Not my favourite from that year though. That would probably fall to Kill Bill but I don’t necessarily consider that a classic either to be honest. Interesting post as always.
