“l’m not anti-Christ or anti-religion, l just think it’s encouraging that people are leaving the Church and going back to God. ” – Lenny Bruce
Number of Times Seen – 1 (24 Apr 2015)
Brief Synopsis – Biopic of controversial comedian Lenny Bruce who championed for free speech in comedy in the 1960’s.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I have wanted to see for some time and for some unexplained reason never got around to it.
I went into it with very high expectations and was completely disappointed.
Dustin Hoffman is ok in the lead role but IMHO this is far from being his best work.
Perhaps my problem is that I’m just not a big fan of Bob Fosse’s work.
It just wasn’t interesting to watch and the scenes that were good were few and far between, but I guess I can understand why some people really liked it.
Bottom Line – Had high expectations for this and was sorely disappointed. Hoffman is ok here but he has done must better work elsewhere. Think I just don’t like the way Fosse presents movies.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The character of Sherman Hart is based on Milton Berle; the real name wasn’t used because Berle was still alive and there were fears he might sue for libel. But the character uses all of Berle’s mannerisms and trademark shtick, including sticking the cigar under his top lip. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
