“Gotta love crab. In the nick of time too. I couldn’t take much more of those coconuts. Coconut milk is a natural laxative. That’s something Gilligan never told us. ” – Chuck Nolan
Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (Jan 2001, DVD and 3 May 2015)
Brief Synopsis – After a devastating plane crash somewhere in the Pacific, a Fed-Ex executive must find the strength to survive on a deserted island until he can be rescued.
My Take on it – Tom Hanks is one of the best actors around and this movie gives us yet another example of his amazing acting abilities.
He already had two Best Actor Oscars to his name and I believe he would have gotten his third if Russell Crowe hadn’t given such an amazing performance the previous year with The Insider (1999) and the Academy felt that he was ‘owed’ it because there is no way he was deserving enough from just his work in Gladiator (2000).
I have always found this movie to be very powerful emotionally because of its theme of hope, survival and finding your path in life.
Helen Hunt is great opposite Hanks in the scenes they share and despite half the movie featuring only Hanks on an island by himself, the writing is spectacular and we dont feel it get boring at all.
I love the musical score by Alan Silvestri because to me it is a theme of hope and survival.
Bottom Line – Another amazing performance by Hanks for which he should have won the Oscar. Written very well that even the parts on the Island by himself don’t feel boring at all. Hanks obviously carries this entire movie by himself but the scenes with Hunt help give the story an even more emotional feeling. Amazing score by Alan Silvestri that to me really gives off such a great feeling of hope and survival. Highly recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – “Wilson” is obviously a reference to the manufacturer of the ball used in the movie. But other Wilsons have played an important role in Tom Hanks life and career. Hanks’ wife is actress Rita Wilson. And in Hanks’ first TV role, he played the part of Kip Wilson in Bosom Buddies (1980). (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy
