Number of Times Seen – Between 3-5 times (3 May 2015)
Brief Synopsis – Biopic of gangster Bugsy Siegel’s rise and fall to power in 1940’s Hollywood
My Take on it – I’ll never understand Hollywood’s infatuation with stars like Warren Beatty. Yes, he is an accomplished actor and director but that shouldn’t be enough to garner this movie 10 Oscar nominations.
This movie gives us a good impression of a gangster whose ideas of how to run his business often clashed with the norm of the day.
In hindsight, his innovative ideas were correct but came before the world was willing to accept such ideas as pragmatic.
His character’s love for Hollywood is perhaps another reason why this movie was embraced by the industry.
Beatty and future real life wife Annette Benning ironically feel very wrong together and I couldn’t feel any chemistry between them.
This movie is far from perfect but has some great scenes that make it just slightly better than your average gangster movie
Bottom Line – Gives a good impression of who Bugsy was; a dreamer and a businessman whose motivations often clashed with his colleagues. The ‘industry’ loves Beatty more than they should because this movie is far from being perfect but still has some entertaining scenes. Terrible chemistry between Beatty and Benning which is quite ironic.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – After working on this film, Warren Beatty and Annette Bening were married. They’d met several years before when she auditioned for another Beatty production. They met again when she was seriously considered for the role of Tess Trueheart in Dick Tracy (1990). (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
