Affliction (1997)

affliction“I think there’s some dirty business going on in this town.” – Wade Whithouse

Number of Times Seen – 2 (26 Feb 2006 and 13 May 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A small town sheriff’s life gets turned around when he takes on a case of corruption in their town.

My Take on it – This is a movie that I recalled being very intense and have avoided rewatching it for years because there are some scenes about fathers and sons that I didn’t want to re-experience.

On the other hand, I recalled that the story involves a very good police mystery, so I decided to give it another try.

I’m glad I rewatched it despite it being very intense.

The performances of both Nick Nolte and James Coburn are unbelievable here.  This is perhaps Nolte’s best and most intense performance and Coburn deservingly won a Best Supporting actor for his role as a very stern father who has left scars on his sons and wife even after many years.

The mystery is interesting and gets more involved as the story evolves.

The characters are very layered and you don’t always know which characters to agree with and which not to

This isn’t a movie that I believe one can watch over and over again, but it is an enjoyably intense thriller with an added layer of familial strife.

Bottom Line – Interesting story that is not the easiest to sit through. Most of the subject matter is very intense and you don’t know which characters to agree with and which not to.  Nolte and Coburn are both amazing here.  Coburn definitely deserved his Oscar for this role.  Not a movie one can watch over and over tho. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – James Coburn’s part was first turned down by Paul Newman and then James Garner, both turned it down because they felt that it would be very tiring to play such a dark, awful character. Both actors were friends of Coburn, and Garner suggested him for the part.(From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
