Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (Theater in ’86, cable and 12 May 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A young couple moves into a new house and unexpectedly find that it’s in much worse condition than they originally thought and begins to fall apart around them.
My Take on it – I was reminded about this movie by the lovely Reut of Sweet Archive when she reviewed it last week
It has been at least 25 years since I saw this movie and recalled that it was quite funny in the way that the house literally crumbled minute by minute.
I can’t say that I didn’t enjoy any of this, because I extremely enjoyed some of the hilarious scenes where we see things fall apart.
Unfortunately, the story itself isn’t so great and despite Tom Hanks and Shelly Long being very good actors, they had little to no chemistry together.
The movie just doesn’t age well overall and many scenes which worked better 30 years ago, just don’t elicit the same feelings now.
Worth a watch for the few laughs, but don’t expect a masterpiece. 😦
Bottom Line – Has some really funny scenes, but overall the movie just doesn’t stand the test of time so well and it isn’t as good as it was perceived to be back in the 80’s. Hanks and Long are good actors, but it’s hard to imagine them as a couple because their chemistry together is non-existent.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The first ever collaboration of actor Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg the latter of whom acted as executive producer. The two would go on to collaborate on a number of other ventures. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
