Number of Times Seen – Probably 3 times (Cable in the 80’s, 9 Aug 2008 and 14 May 2015)
Brief Synopsis – An aspiring Southern writer living in NYC during the late 1940’s, meets a young couple and they all fast become great friends. Little does he know the hardships that his new friends endured during the previous years.
My Take on it – This is a movie that more people have only heard of instead of actually seeing.
Many people feel that this movie is the benchmark for Meryl Streep’s performances because the role is extremely intense. She deservingly won an Oscar for Best Actress for this role.
In addition to Streep’s unbelievable performance, Kevin Kline is also superb. This movie helped solidify their places in Hollywood history because it would open up so many doors for both of them.
The interesting thing about this movie is that it labors on without the audience completely understanding what is going on, but like a puzzle, it’s slowly revealed to us. This inevitably causes a reverse chain reaction which explains all to us
Bottom Line – Very powerful movie once all is revealed and then all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Amazing performances by Kline and Streep helped further solidify them in Hollywood. Streep won a Best Actress Oscar for this movie. Slow moving at certain points, but worth waddling thru them. Highly Recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Meryl Streep did the final scene (her choice) in one take and refused to do it again, saying that as a mother, she found it too painful and emotionally draining. Years later, Streep appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show and the scene of her choice was shown. Meryl was uncomfortable while the clip was playing and she revealed that she had never watched the scene before that very moment. (From IMDB)
Rating – Oscar Worthy
