McFarland, USA (2015)

mcfarland“I’ll be honest with you. The odds are stacked against us. You guys are super human. There’s nothing you can’t do with that kind of strength, with that kind of heart.” – Jim White

Number of Times Seen – 1 (17 May 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A high school sports coach with a turbulent history moves his family to a rural town in California and tries to make a difference. Based on a true story.

My Take on it – I have always been a fan of Hollywoodicized feel-good true sports stories despite knowing that it can’t all really be faithful to the truth.

Kevin Costner is once again back in the leading man role and proves yet again that he has always been destined for the teacher/mentor kind of role. He was very good last year in Jack Ryan in that role and was one of the few bright spots of Man of Steel (2013) as Jonathan Kent.

I liked how they chose to focus on a less popular sport and explained to us quickly what it’s all about.

The final scene is very emotional and fitting for a movie like this.

Bottom Line – Costner has once again settled back into the leading man role and is great in the mentor/teacher role. Upliftung true sports stories are always enjoyable to watch even with the knowledge of it being Hollywoodicized. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Colombian music superstar Juanes was approached to write the theme song for the film. “Juntos/Together” was performed during the 2015 Grammy Awards. It is the first Latin song in 10 years to be given the privilege. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy

  2. I was unable to see this in the theater. I really want to see this movie though. I was a cross country runner in high school (and have actually gotten back into running recently). So I am very interested in this. Besides, basically every sports movie that Kevin Costner is in is really good. And every sports movie that Disney does is really good. So, this seems like a can’t lose situation with the combination of Costner, Disney, and sports.
