“To be enraged with a dumb brute that acted out of blind instinct is blasphemous.” – Starbuck
Number of Times Seen – 1 (21 May 2015)
Brief Synopsis – The classic tale of the ship that chased the great white whale known as Moby Dick
My Take on it – When thinking of an actor to portray the obsessed seaman seeking his White whale, I’m not sure that Gregory Peck would be high on that list.
After having read this book sometime in hih xchool and constantly getting lost, it was interesting to see it adapted for the screen.
IMHO, many of the classics are better when viewed (on stage or screen) in addition to just reading the books because it gives you much more scope and depth to what is transpiring.
The problem that I had with this movie is the fact that it feels too long and drawn out and some scenes feel quite boring. Perhaps the book is also that way, but since it’s been so long since I read it, I perhaps forgot if it is an interesting read or not.
Bottom Line – Interesting to see the story adapted for the screen. The problem is that the way the story is told comes across as too slow and at times it gets a bit boring. Not sure if Peck was the best choice for the lead because he doesn’t seem to have it in him to play someone like Ahab.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Starbuck’s Coffee franchise took its name from the character Starbuck of the Pequod crew. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy

Sweet! I just rewatched it and found Peck so captivating as Ahab. And the sermon scene with Welles was epic. It holds up very well for sure.

I thought Peck was mesmerising as Ahab! I thought he was fantastic! I’ve reviewed it myself actually, check it out if you ever have a moment 🙂
Oh yes of course Orson Welles too!!!!
I really find it a very exciting film, the whole madness of Ahab and the way he whips the crew up into a mad frenzy. Very good 🙂

The gold coin sequence on the Pequod is incredible, no? “Death to Moby Dick!” I also like when Starbuck catches Ahab having nightmares and afterwards he tells him “I’d strike the sun if it insulted me!” so damn cool. I will check out your review! Thanks 😀👍

What a great recommendation! Shame you didn’t enjoy it much.
It’s weird, I had pretty much the opposite feelings when I watched it – I found it immensely exciting and I thought Peck was literally awesome as Captain Ahab!
Didn’t you find it so eerie at the end when he wad dead, but his arm was swinging in the breeze, beckoning the crew over to Moby Dick? Gives me shivers thinking about it!
