Number of Times Seen – 2 (29 May 2001 and 25 May 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A band of rag-tag superheroes attempt to defend the city from evil when the city’s superhero protector goes missing.
My Take on it – I have always been a fan of comic books and superheroes and when this came out a decade and a half ago I was excited to see what they would do here.
They fo quite a goid job of spoofing movies of the genre and manage more than a few laughs.
Had it been made today in the midst of the recent avalance of superhero movies, I think they would have succeeded in making a more thrilling, exciting and entertaining movie.
The cast is really fun here with Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, William H. Macy and Hank Azaria doing well within their characters.
It was a bold move not giving any of the characters trafitional superpowers and it’s funny when their powers are introduced.
I just wish they had done this better and made it more entertaining.
Bottom Line – Funny pseudo spoof of superhero movies that might have been constructed better if made today. Fun cast. Interesting superpowers for the characters, but ultimately it isn’t as entertaining as one would expect from a superhero movie.
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – According to the DVD commentary, the scene where The Spleen accidentally ignites a blast of flatulence standing by a barrel with a fire in it was a happy accident. Apparently, a crew member had tossed a plastic lighter in the barrel. It happened to explode (a small explosion, but an explosion none the less) while filming Paul Reubens. The reactions that followed were created after the fact, capitalizing on the moment caught on film. (From IMDB)
Rating – BAFTA Worthy
