Ice Cold in Alex (1958)

john_mills_alex_uk_dvd_cover_medium“[draining his glass of beer] Worth waiting for” – Capt. Anson

Number of Times Seen – 1 (2 Jun 2015)

Brief Synopsis – During WWII in Africa, 3 officers and 2 nurses must find a way to cross the desert while also avoiding the enemy.

My Take on it – I have been meaning to see this movie for months, but it just never got high enough on my list.

I liked the general idea of the story and how it injected a mystery within a seemingly normal war story, but the fact that a clear motive or explanation seems to be missing takes away from it all.

I was always curious about the meaning of the title and I must say it’s a clever concept for one.

I’ve seen many much better films that take place during the war and this one felt completely average to me and I was indifferent about what would happen in the story.

Bottom Line – Interesting idea, but done in a strange way. I liked the mystery aspect of it, but we are never told the real motive which takes away from it all. There are much better war movies out there.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The cast earned considerably more than they were paid for the film when footage from it was used many years later in a British commercial for Carlsberg lager.(From IMDB)

Rating – BAFTA Worthy

  1. ** Spoiler alert for readers ** I’m interested that you found this film merely OK. I’ve always thought it was absolutely wonderful, but it’s a while since I’ve seen it. I have the DVD, so I’m going to have to go back and watch it now. But I think the key thing about the film is that the resolution is all about that, beyond the barriers of nationality, people are basically the same. Hence all the main characters sharing the pleasure of an ice cold beer at the end of their journey.

  3. Ice cold (beer) in Alex! It is a good title. I know you put your trivia in anyway but I’m pretty sure that’s how Carlsberg chose their ‘worth waiting for’ slogan. How perfect when John Mills drinks from it at the end, the Carlsberg bit is facing the camera!

I do really like this film but it’s not one of my favourites. I think of it less as a war movie though and more of a personal movie about a bloke’s with a drink problem. Plus the adventures/friends/enemies along the way type stuff.
