Time Limit (1957)

time limit“A man can be a hero all his life, but if in the last month of it, or the last week, or even the last minute, the pressure becomes too great and he breaks, then he’s branded for life. You can’t ask a man to be a hero forever. There ought to be a time limit. ” – Harry Cargill

Brief Synopsis – An army officer must investigate allegations of treason by a former POW in Korea.

My Take on it – I came across this movie a few weeks back and was interested to see how a movie from the 50’s would treat a story of POW’s in Korea so soon after the war.

This movie works so well because of the crisp dialogue that helps us understand what happened in Korea and how its repercussions still resonated a few years later back in the US.

This was originally a play that was brought to the screen and is amazingly adapted

The plot is very good once it starts to snowball and you begin to understand everything that is happening and that has happened.

Richard Widmark is great as the lead investigator and he successfully manages to convey his character’s honor while following through on his investigation.

This is a movie about honor, courage, duty and survival in the most dire of circumstances.

It can be considered among the best movies about Pow’s.

Bottom Line – Great play brought to the screen. Plot is amazing once it gets moving. Expert dialogue makes it riveting. Widmark is excellent in the lead role. Goes on my list and can hold its head up high that it is among the best movies about POW’s. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In addition to playing the lead, Richard Widmark also co-produced Time Limit. Widmark reportedly paid $100,000 to The Theatre Guild for the film rights to the play Time Limit. It was the first picture for Widmark’s independent production company, Heath Productions, Inc.
