Ike: Countdown to D-Day (2004)

ike“There are two kinds of problem drinkers Chief Whip; those who drink too much and those who drink too little.” – Winston Churchill

Number of Times Seen – 1 (10 Jun 2015)

Brief Synopsis – An intimate look at the weeks before the D-Day invasion from the perspective of the Generals and statesmen who developed the plan.

My Take on it – As a fan of historical movies and WWII in particular, I was excited to see the planning of the D-Day invasion from the perspective of Ike and his advisers.

From a purely historical perspective, it was great to see the back and forths between the highest ranking military leaders as to the how and when of the invasion.

Unfortunately, I had hoped that it would feel much more impactful than it does.

Tom Selleck was definitely an interesting choice to play IKe because even with his commanding statue and voice, he looks very little like IKe (even with a shaved head).

The story itself is solid and I like dhow it shows the forethought by the Generals as to how to do things in a way to lessen the casualty rate but by still trying to succeed.

Bottom Line – Very interesting from a historical perspective, but it isn’t nearly as impactful as I had hoped it would be. Selleck (even with a shaved head) isn’t the best choice for Ike, but the story is still quite solid. Recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Tom Selleck, a non-smoker, temporarily took up the habit to play Dwight Eisenhower, who was, according to Selleck in the DVD’s bonus feature, a four-pack-a-day smoker at the time. In 1949, Eisenhower was advised by his doctor and friend, Howard Snyder, to cut down on the cigarettes to one pack per day. Eisenhower initially did so, but after a few days, he decided that counting cigarettes was worse than smoking and quit permanently in 1949. He never smoked again. (From IMDB)

Rating – Globe Worthy
