Genre Guesstimation – Can’t Buy Me Love (1987)

The idea behind this feature (Genre Guesstimation) is for me to watch a bunch of new movies (or ones that I haven’t seen many times) from the chosen monthly GG genre in order to expand my knowledge of movies within that particular genre.

This month’s Genre was chosen by Kim of Tranquil Dreams and she chose teenage/high school romance movies as the Genre for June.

Let’s see if I felt that this movie would be worthy of being in the company of my others favorite movies in the genre of Teenage/high school romance movies…

cant buy me“You can do anything you want, anything you put your heart and mind into!” – Ronald Miller

Number of Times Seen – At least 5 times (Theater in ’87, cable and 22 Jun 2015)

Brief Synopsis – An unpopular high school student pays the most popular girl in school $1000 to be his girlfriend for a month in order to become part of the “in-crowd”

My Take on it – I actually remember seeing this in the Theater as a 13 year old back when it came out and really enjoying the way the movie portrayed teenagers, the “in” and “out” crowd at school and pining after the girl of your dreams.

Nowadays, everyone thinks of Patrick Dempsey as McDreamy, but I remember him as one of two things; the guy who was the first to get infected by the monkey in Outbreak (1995) and as the geeky teen in numerous 80’s movies (this one, Meatballs III, Loverboy to name a few) who got an extreme makeover and became extremely popular.

Watching this movie now, it seems quite silly and pretentious and I question how (or why) they even attempted a movie with a plot like this one.

This actually makes me wonder why they haven’t yet re-made it. 🙂

The story itself feels very forced and the dialogue is very cheesy 80’s.

When I watch a movie about romance, I try to look for the real chemistry between the characters in order for me to truly believe in their romance.

This movie has glimpses of those moments, but it gets lost too quickly.

Once those feelings are gone, we lose the inner urge to cheer for the characters to end up together at the end.

This is quite a shame because it had those moments and lost them too easily. 😦

Bottom Line – Liked it much more as a kid.  It now seems somewhat silly and pretentious. Funny how Dempsey was the go-to guy for geek extreme makeover in his youth. The story feels very forced and I wonder how they would potentially re-make a movie like this now.  There are snippets of good chemistry between the characters, but they don’t last long enough for it to truly matter and make us want them to end up together.

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Patrick Dempsey, now a car collector and race driver, used all of his salary from the movie paying for his first car, a 1963 356 Porsche convertible. (From IMDB)

Genre Grandeur Worthy? – Nope, felt for the characters much more when I was younger, but it feels too forced when watching it now.

Rating – BAFTA Worthy
