Man on Wire (2008)

man-on-wire-movie-poster-2008-1020422924“…I observed the tight rope dancer… because you couldn’t call him a walker… approximately half-way between the two towers. I personally figured I was watching something that somebody else would never see again in the world. Thought it was once in a lifetime. ” – Sgt. Charles Daniels

Brief Synopsis – Documentary about one of the most daring and dangerous spectacles ever attempted.

My Take on it – I have never been the biggest fan of documentaries, but lately my opinion of the genre has started to change because I’ve been exposed to more and more amazing documentary films.

Case in point, this film which I’ve known about ever since it won the Best Doc Oscar in 2008, but for some reason never got around to watching.

This is such a great movie because it utilizes so many techniques to enhance the story and the tension.

It mixed interview footage with reenactments, real pictures and videos to a point where we don’t know which is true and which was solely created for the movie, so it’s easy to want to assume and believe it’s all real.

The music score gives off the feeling that we ate watching a thrilling heist movie instead of a documentary.

Director Robert Zemeckis is currently filming a movie about this event starring Joseph Gordon – Levitt that is to be released in the fall.

I really can’t believe that it took me so long to finally see this amazing movie

Bottom Line – Great mix of interviews, real pictures and reenactments make this a very satisfying movie to watch. Excellent musical score makes it feel more like a thriller than a documentary. Really can’t believe it took me so long to watch this. Can’t wait to see the movie being made by Zemeckis and starring Gordon-Levitt that is slated a fall release. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – Low on money for the Sydney Harbor Bridge walk, Philippe Petit got the cable in exchange for an impromptu juggling and magic show he put on for employees. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy

  2. I found Philip Pettite to be an absolutely insufferable subject. I didn’t like this movie much unfortunately but I appreciate it for its technical execution. Good to hear you’ve taken to it man. Its definitely an interesting story but when I can’t tolerate the subject/person it makes it difficult for me.

  3. Amazing film and an example of why documentaries can match any powerful drama or blockbuster. I think it’s a shame that they are making it into a movie as it means people miss out on watching a great documentary. Hopefully it’ll have the opposite effect.
