Brief Synopsis – In a futuristic society where everyone is separated into one of five groups based on their potential and abilities, a young girl who is about to come of age must try and figure out why she feels no connection to any one specific class.

My Take on it – When I saw this movie for the first time last year, I was caught up in the whole Hunger Games/dystopian society rush and enjoyed this much more than I rightfully should have.

Having come down from that lofty feeling, and upon rewatching this movie, I think part of my enthusiasm was because Shailene Woodley’s amazing performance in Fault in Our Stars (2014) was still resonating in my mind.  She is a great actress and we can expect some more amazing performances from here, but I think she is much more effective in dramas than in teen action movies like this one.

I wish I could say that I found this to be an enjoyable rewatch, but it felt too much like many of the other films in this genre and I didn’t really think that they have much originality to offer us.

There are some great philosophical questions raised here and the answers they provide are adequate, but still lacking in many ways.

Bottom Line – I think Hollywood has gone a bit too far with teen movies about dystopian societies.  This was better the first time I saw this, but now it just felt like they were going thru the motions and it got to be pretty annoying as it continued.  Woodley has a great future ahead of her, but she should stick to more dramatic role

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – The sound that Peter (Miles Teller) makes when Tris (Shailene Woodley) punches him in the throat is genuine. Woodley didn’t want to hurt Teller, so she was being timid. As filming continued, Teller and Woodley got more aggressive and during one take, Woodley actually hit him in the throat, which Teller wasn’t expecting. This is the take that is in the movie. Rating –BAFTA Worthy (extremely downgraded from original review)
