Number of Times Seen – Too many to count (video in early 80’s, cable, video, DVD and 21 Jul 2015)
Brief Synopsis – A Polish Rabbi must travel from Philadelphia to San Francisco in order to reach his new congregation. Along the way he encounters many adventures and trials that he never could imagine.
My Take on it – This is a movie that I’ve seen so many times and never can get enough of.
The amount of crazy situations that Gene Wilder’s character get into is unbelievable. Every one of them is truly more hilarious and outrageous than the last but also endearing.
This is IMHO Wilder’s funniest work because of the uniqueness of his character and situations.
Harrison Ford is amazing as his traveling companion in this pre Indiana Jones era film and together they help make this buddy-buddy comedic western succeed in almost every scene.
Besides Wilder and Ford, this movie features numerous cameos by now familiar actors. The funniest one is with Vincent Schiavelli as a priest who has taken a vow of silence.
Bottom Line – Hilarious comedy western that is IMHO one of Wilder’s best roles. Ford also gives a great performance making this an excellent buddy-buddy movie in the old west. Lots of cameo roles by now familiar actors. Most notably Vincent Schiavelli as a priest who has taken his vows. Highly recommended!
MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In his autobiography, Gene Wilder says that John Wayne was offered the part that was eventually played by Harrison Ford. Wayne loved the role and was eager to work with Wilder. However, an agent tried to offer Wayne less than his usual fee and the legendary actor turned the film down. This may be true, but it is actually unlikely. By 1979 Wayne was too ill with stomach cancer to consider film work, and in fact he died later that year from the disease. (From IMDB)
