Wall Street (1987)

wall street “Money’s only something you need in case you don’t die tomorrow… ” – Carl Fox

Number of Times Seen – Between 5-10 times (cable in the 80’s , video and 22 Jul 2015)

Brief Synopsis – A yoing up and coming broker tries to get into the world of high stakes Wall Street deals any way he can.

My Take on it – Hot off his Oscar win for directing Platoon (1986), Oliver Stone chose to film a movie about another kind of jungle; the corporate one.

The story itself isn’t even close to being Stone’s best or even most engaging movie, but he does an excellent job introducing us to the financial world and in doing so created a monster called Gordon Gecko.

Michael Douglas does an excellent job portraying this corporate giant and truly deserved his Best Actor Oscar for this role.

The story is very fast paced and keeps us interested throughout despite the corporate scheming done along the way.

His crash course in the Wall Street world is done well and we get the idea of how things work.

The best part of this movie is the pairing of Charlie Sheen and his father, Martin.

The father’s portrayal of a hard working blue collar worker outshines his son’s role as a money hungry yuppie trying to climb the corporate ladder as fast as he can.

Daryl Hannah and Sean Young are both completely wasted here.

Bottom Line – Not Stone’s best and far from being the most intense, but his creation of Gordon Gecko is an amazing achievement on its own. The movie is fast paced and gives us a very quick overview into the world of financial and corporate deals. Douglas is amazing here and definitely deserved his Best Actor Oscar for this role. Liked seeing the Sheens work together but even here the father’s portrayal of the moral compass is much more engaging than the son’s portrayal of the money hungry egotistical broker. Recommended!
