For this month’s next review for Genre Grandeur – Dark Comedies, here’s a review of Fargo (1996)  by me.

Brief Synopsis – A car salesmen develops a scheme to try and cover his outstanding debts and things spiral into a comedy of errors that he never expected

My Take on it – Of all of the movies made by Joel and Ethan Coen, I personally believe that this is their true masterpiece.

They were able to create a story filled with interesting characters, unexpected plot twists, snappy and witty dialogue and of course a choice of locations in order to get the accents just right.

This movie is a crime thriller that takes things so far to the extreme that you end up laughing at most of the scenes not because they are comedic per se, but rather because of the absurdity and stupidity of it all.

The choice of cast is amazing with William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand all doing excellent jobs and present their characters perfectly. For this role, McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress.

Not only is this my favorite movie by the Coen Brothers, but it is also IMHO the best movie made in 1996 because everything is done almost perfectly from every movie making perspective.

Bottom Line – Excellent crime thriller that really takes the story to the level of a dark comedy because of its characters, locations and situations. The Coen Brothers really know how to take a story slightly beyond the extreme and give us a tense, enjoyable story that also makes us laugh at the stupidity and absurdity of it all. Amazing cast all fit in perfectly with this storyline. The Coen Brothers have created a movie that IMHO will always be difficult for them to top because it is done so well in all aspects. Not only is this my favorite of their movies, but it is also IMHO the best movie made in 1996. Highly recommended!
