Brief Synopsis – A car salesmen develops a scheme to try and cover his outstanding debts and things spiral into a comedy of errors that he never expected

My Take on it – Of all of the movies made by Joel and Ethan Coen, I personally believe that this is their true masterpiece.

They were able to create a story filled with interesting characters, unexpected plot twists, snappy and witty dialogue and of course a choice of locations in order to get the accents just right.

This movie is a crime thriller that takes things so far to the extreme that you end up laughing at most of the scenes not because they are comedic per se, but rather because of the absurdity and stupidity of it all.

The choice of cast is amazing with William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand all doing excellent jobs and present their characters perfectly. For this role, McDormand won the Oscar for Best Actress.

Not only is this my favorite movie by the Coen Brothers, but it is also IMHO the best movie made in 1996 because everything is done almost perfectly from every movie making perspective.

Bottom Line – Excellent crime thriller that really takes the story to the level of a dark comedy because of its characters, locations and situations. The Coen Brothers really know how to take a story slightly beyond the extreme and give us a tense, enjoyable story that also makes us laugh at the stupidity and absurdity of it all. Amazing cast all fit in perfectly with this storyline. The Coen Brothers have created a movie that IMHO will always be difficult for them to top because it is done so well in all aspects. Not only is this my favorite of their movies, but it is also IMHO the best movie made in 1996. Highly recommended!

MovieRob’s Favorite Trivia – In all of the scenes that show Marge with her husband Norm, they are either eating or lying in bed. (From IMDB)

Rating – Oscar Worthy (no change from original review)

  2. Great review. You said it so well. Fargo is probably the best Coen Bros, with Blood Simple, Lebowski, O Brother, and No Country close behind. It seems like these guys take turns directing or something, because I seem to like every 2nd movie they make. Now which brother is responsible for that 😉

I remember seeing this in the theatre before the hype hit. It was such a strange, unique, and ultimately awesome experience. Every role was excellent. The dialogue was spot on, to the point of delirium. The plot was exciting, as the plan went sour a step at a time. This little movie is a big success. Thanks for reminding us by spotlighting it here.

  4. One of my all time favourite films 🙂

I always noticed Marge and her hubby were constantly eating haha.

I love the atmosphere, the foreboding music, the cast, the story, it’s just great! I far prefer this to the Coen’s more ‘wacky’ films.
